Carter Is Here!

Per my earlier post, we were so happy to welcome Carter Milton Booth into the world on Monday, 4/30.  Below is how his birth story unfolded:

Sunday, 4/29
  • 1:00 PM - Enjoyed a wonderful Baby Sprinkle hosted by close friends and drank some "labor-inducing" tea
  • 3:30 PM - Began having contractions on the way home from the Baby Sprinkle that felt like the real thing
  • 4:30 PM - Took a warm bath to see if contractions would subside
  • 5:30 PM - Called the doc after having stronger contractions over the last two hours - she had me go into the hospital to get checked out
  • 5:45 PM - Dawn and Scott arrive at our house to keep Braxton for us - such sweet friends!
  • 6:15 PM - Checked in at Piedmont Hospital to be observed
  • 7:00 PM - Nurse checks me and I am 3-4 cm dilated; we begin our 45-minute walk of the square to see if I progress any further
  • 8:00 PM - Nurse checks me again and I am 4-5 cm dilated
  • 9:30 PM - Doc comes in to check on me - we are officially here for the long-haul!  Marty decided to order some supper to get him through the night - it was so hard not to take more than one bite of his Jimmy John's sandwich!
  • 10:00 PM - Nurse began IV and doc broke my water
  • 11:00 PM - Requested my epidural!
  • 11:30 PM - Got rechecked - 6 cm dilated!  Now it is time to rest.
Monday, 4/30
  • 2:30 AM - Rechecked again - 9.5 cm dilated - nurse has me rest another 30 minutes until I am fully dilated - of course, I had to call her after 20 min because I felt the pressure to push
  • 3:00 AM - Started pushing
  • 3:15 AM - After third push, baby was ready to come out; Doc was called quick to come deliver
  • 3:34 AM - Carter Milton Booth was born!

  • 4:00 AM - Nurses took Carter back to Intermediate Care to bathe him and check his breathing since he swallowed fluid in the birth canal; Marty was able to go back with them and take pictures
  • 4:30 AM - Marty and I gave Carter kisses as they took him to the NICU for a Glucose IV and respiratory monitoring - it was so hard letting him go after just meeting him!
  • 5:00 AM - Headed to our recovery room - missing sweet Carter already!  We tried to take a little nap before visiting hours began in the NICU but it was hard to sleep knowing he was there
  • 8:00 AM - Made our first visit to the NICU - our sweet little man was hooked up to all sorts of monitoring cords and had his poor arm taped up with an IV
  • 1:00 PM - Finally got to hold and feed my sweet boy in the NICU
  • 4:00 PM - Me-Mom and Pop-Pop come to visit
  • 7:30 PM - The Woods Family brings us dinner and Casey stops in for a visit - they were so excited to meet Carter in the NICU
  • 10:00 PM - Try to get some rest in between feedings at the NICU
On Tuesday, Carter got a visit from Grandmama and Big Brother Braxton.  That morning Grandmama had said they were coming to see Carter and Braxton was able to say his name clear as day.  When Braxton got to the hospital he told me that he was there to see baby brother and his name was Carter.  Those words were too precious to this Momma's ears!  We had a great visit and Braxton was so sweet - you could tell that he wanted to touch him so bad.  Later that day, Carter was moved to the Intermediate Care Nursery since they had a room come open.  He should have been in there from the beginning, but rooms and resources were limited.  It was nice because he shared a room with one other baby instead of being in one large room that only had curtains for privacy.  He was also able to have his IV removed which meant we knew he would be coming home soon.  They told us it would be 48 hours before he could be released once the IV was out.  Later that evening, Casey brought us dinner and the Dixon's stopped by for a visit.  We finally got to sleep at a decent hour and woke up every 3 hours to head to the nursery for Carter's feedings.

Wednesday morning, we headed to an infant CPR class and started to pack our things since we were being discharged.  We decided to stay until Carter's evening feeding so that we wouldn't have to supplement as much.  Before his last feeding, Marty and I walked over to Uncle Julio's to enjoy some Mexican food - it was a nice change of pace from hospital food (although we were so lucky to have sweet friends bring us some meals as well).  After dinner, we had to say goodbye to our sweet Carter for the night and head home.    It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do leaving him there at the hospital.  I don't know how people do it for weeks at a time.  We feel very blessed that it was only one night.

On Thursday morning, I headed back to the hospital for Carter's morning feeding.  I went back home and picked up Marty's mom so she could come visit again.  Upon our arrival, we got the best news ever - Carter was coming home with us that day!  We headed back home so that Marty could come back with me to pick up our sweet little man.  At 3:00 PM, Carter was discharged and was in the car on the way home.

We are so thankful to all our friends and family who helped us throughout the week.  We could not have done it without you!
